Webinar · 18 August 2026

On 18 August 2026, five years after the events of August 2021, PEN AF held a webinar that took a critical, multidimensional look at the Afghan diaspora: its performance, its responsibilities and its potential role in Afghanistan's future. Moderated by former diplomat Omid Kamal, the panel brought together three Afghan scholars who went beyond familiar debates.

Dr. Mohammad Amin Ahmadi, Professor and President of Ibn Sina University, examined the historical and identity taboos that have divided the diaspora from within and limited its capacity for real impact. He spoke about the diaspora's responsibility in building a shared, pluralist and future-oriented narrative.

Dr. Orzala Nemat, researcher and founder of DRG, assessed the diaspora's representative role over the past five years through a sociological lens. She explored how it can move from symbolic presence to genuine and effective agency, particularly through the contribution of its academic and professional members.

Mr. Sharafuddin Azimi, psychologist and university professor, addressed a less-examined question: how the diaspora's narratives, positions and public messaging affect communities inside Afghanistan today, and which behaviors foster hope and resilience and which cause unintended harm.
